Gary Hull, legendary Oregon basketball coach, out at Western Christian

After nearly 40 years, Gary Hull has left Western Christian.

David Phelps, the principal of the middle school and high school, confirmed to The Oregonian/OregonLive on Monday that the school made the announcement that Hull is no longer employed by Western Christian.

On top of being the boys basketball coach, Hull was the school’s athletic director.

“We wish Gary the best and will work to find a successor,” Phelps wrote in an email.

Starting back in the ‘80s, Hull is one of Oregon’s longest-tenured coaches. He started his career with Western in 1987, when the school was known as Western Mennonite, and has been at that post ever since.

In that span, Hull led the team to a 786-254 record. His career wins put him at No. 2 in Oregon history, behind Mike Doherty’s 850 from 1963-2012 at eight different schools.

Hull’s Pioneers teams won Class 2A state championships in 2011, 2019, 2022 and 2024. They finished as state runner-ups in 2008, 2012, 2018, 2020 and 2023.
