Man, 44, shot Thursday morning in downtown Salem

A 44-year-old man was shot in the torso Thursday morning in downtown Salem but refused to cooperate with a police investigation, Salem Police Department spokeswoman Angela Hedrick said.

Officers responded to the 100 block of Northeast Commercial Street after receiving a call around 5:25 a.m. They found the man, who was taken to Salem Hospital with a non-life-threatening injury.

The at first man told police he was in a verbal argument with two other men but refused to cooperate further.

Hedrick said there is no apparent connection between this shooting and the incident a day earlier where a dispute between two groups led to a volley of bullets in the Riverfront Park parking lot a block away.

Police recovered 96 bullet casings from the park but said no injuries were reported.

Police have not announced any arrests in connection with either shooting.
