A fire Monday night at a northeast Salem auto body shop shut down Northeast Broadway Street between Market and Hood Streets.

Salem fire crews received a call for a commercial fire around 5:45 pm. Monday, according to Salem Emergency Preparedness Manager Gregory Walsh

The fire, at Gerber Collision located at 1305 Broadway St. N.E., was under control as of Tuesday morning. Crews remained at the scene addressing utilities and investigating the fire.

The road closures are expected for the next few hours, Walsh said.

The cause of the fire is unknown, and no injuries were reported.

“It appears to be accidental,” Walsh said. “A small structure housing a compressor and some other equipment was the start of the fire likely due to the hot weather and overheating equipment.”

Several vehicles were damaged in a lot on the property, while the structure did not catch fire.
